Small things that matter
We would rather you knew enough to make a good decision than rely on us to make it for you. The short articles here explain how locks work, what wears them out, and which small habits keep your doors, keys and cars trouble-free for longer.

Lockout Services
I rent my place. Can I call a locksmith myself?
Yes. A tenant locked out of their own unit can arrange entry directly, and the identification check is the same: something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a bill or a piece of mail, plus photo identification. Where you may want to involve your landlord is any change to the lock afterwards, because tenancy rules in this province expect landlords and tenants to agree on lock changes and to share keys. A locksmith can note what was done for the building manager. Home Lockout Service
Can we put a keyed deadbolt on both sides of the back door for extra security?
On a door people leave through while the building is occupied, the door needs to open from inside with one motion and no key, so a key-both-sides bolt is not the right tool there. Security is added instead with a heavy-duty exit device and a reinforced strike, a keyed trim outside, an alarm contact, or a door position sensor on the access system, all of which keep the way out clear. Can you extract a key from a padlock, mailbox or filing cabinet?
Yes. Small cylinders in padlocks, mailboxes, desk drawers, filing cabinets and cam locks on lockers hold a fragment the same way a door does, and the same slim hooks and spirals fit them. Their keyways are narrower, so it is finer work. Where a padlock is not worth saving, the locksmith will say so and offer a cut-off and a new padlock keyed to your preference instead. Broken Key Extraction
Why did the frame break instead of the lock?
Because that is where the weak point was. A standard strike plate is held by two short screws in a soft wood jamb, and the deadbolt only reaches into a shallow pocket behind it. A kick delivers the full weight of a body to those screws, and the wood around them splits along the grain. The bolt itself is rarely the failure. That is why the repair concentrates on the strike side: a boxed strike, a full-depth pocket and long screws into the stud. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Can the entry door of my condo suite be rekeyed?
Often, but check with your property management first. Condominium corporations have a right to enter a unit on reasonable notice, and without notice in an emergency, and many buildings ask that suite doors stay on a system the corporation can open or that a key be lodged with management. Lobby, garage and locker-room doors belong to the corporation and are theirs to manage. A locksmith will ask about your building's rule and work within it. Lock Rekeying
How high above the knob does the deadbolt go?
The usual position is 140 to 150 mm above the centre of the knob, which lines the two locks up and keeps both within one reach. Manufacturers' templates assume that spacing, which helps a later keypad or handleset line up, though many handlesets still need their own lower hole drilled to that model's template. The height is nudged if it would land on glass, a decorative panel or a hollow spot inside an insulated door, and to make sure the frame behind it is solid. Deadbolt Installation
My door has glass beside it. Should I fit a deadbolt keyed on both sides?
A keyed interior cylinder means finding a key to get out, which is not what you want on a door people use every day. The steadier answer for a door with glass is a single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, combined with a reinforced strike, a longer bolt and a security film or laminated glass in the sidelight. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can my interior doors be serviced too, and can one key work all of them?
Usually yes to the first, and to the second once the locksmith checks the locks. Interior mortise latches with privacy turn buttons are lighter versions of the entry lock and respond to the same clean and re-spring. Interior locks in a house were sometimes supplied to one bit key, and where the key sections, warding and levers actually match, the locksmith can restore that arrangement so a single key opens several bedroom and bathroom doors. It is a practical thing to have when a child locks a bathroom from inside. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Should I change my safe's combination even if it still opens fine?
It depends on who still knows the old one. If a bookkeeper, manager or previous owner who had the combination is no longer with the business, resetting it closes that gap even though nothing about the lock itself has failed. A safe that only the current staff have ever known the code to generally does not need changing on that basis alone. Safe Opening & Combination Change
What is the difference between a mechanical dial lock and an electronic keypad?
A mechanical dial has no battery and is set by hand to a private combination, turning through a sequence to release the bolt; it never runs out of power but takes a little practice to open. An electronic keypad accepts a numeric code and can support several separate codes for different people, but it depends on a battery that eventually needs replacing. Many owners choose based on how many people need access rather than one being simply superior to the other. Safe Installation & Servicing
What information helps before the visit?
A photo of each door's lock from inside and outside, the type of door, whether there is glass nearby and roughly how many keys are in circulation. For a business, a sketch of the doors and who needs to reach each area saves a great deal of time. Mention any door that sticks, has been forced or has a closer or push bar on it. With that, the locksmith arrives with the right formats and a plan to discuss. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
Do I need my landlord's consent before rekeying my unit?
Read the lease, because that is where the answer lives. Commercial tenancies are governed mostly by the lease itself, and many leases require the tenant to tell the landlord when locks change, to provide a key for emergencies, or to use the landlord's approved locksmith. Doors on the building's master system, such as corridor or service doors, are normally the landlord's to change. Bring the lease to the assessment and the locksmith will sort the doors accordingly. Commercial Rekeying
How do you decide how many sub-master levels a business actually needs?
The number follows the organization, not a preference for tidy diagrams. Genuinely distinct groups, such as separate departments or floors with different access needs, each justify a level; access differences that exist only on paper usually do not. A hierarchy with more levels than the business uses in practice is harder to administer without making anyone's day-to-day access meaningfully better. Master Key System Design
Do we still need physical keys after this is installed?
On hardware that supports it, yes: a conventional cylinder sits alongside the electronic reader, cut to work like any other key on the property, though some access-controlled locks are built without one. Where it is fitted, it is meant as a fallback rather than the everyday way in: if a battery dies, a controller faults, or the power stays out longer than the backup lasts, the door still opens by key while the issue is sorted out. Access Control Installation
Can exit hardware be styled to match the rest of the building's finishes?
Yes, within what the door's rating allows. Exit devices and their trim come in a range of finishes to sit alongside other door hardware in the building, and outside trim in particular, being the visible part from a public side, can be chosen to match levers or pulls used elsewhere. A fire-rated opening narrows the finish choice somewhat, since the whole assembly has to stay within its listing. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys
What should I have ready when I call?
The make, model and year of the vehicle, the colour and plate if you can see it, exactly where the car is parked and how to reach it, and where the keys are: on the seat, in the trunk, lost, snapped, or in a fob that has gone quiet. Say whether anyone or any animal is inside, whether the car is a rental or a company vehicle, and whether your identification is on you or in the glovebox. Car Lockout Service
What is a transponder key, and does my car have one?
A transponder is a small chip in the head of the key with no battery of its own. When the key is in the ignition, or the fob is inside the cabin, the immobilizer sends a signal and the chip answers with a code; if the code is unknown, the engine is prevented from running. Every new light vehicle sold in Canada since September 2007 has been required to have an immobilizer, so almost any car from that time on uses one. Car Key Replacement
Can a spare be made from a key that is already worn?
Yes, and it is often a good reason to make one. Rather than tracing every rounded edge of a worn blade onto the new copy, the locksmith can decode the lock or cut to a valid factory code for the blade, then read or clone the chip data separately for the electronics, producing a spare that is cleaner than the original rather than a copy of its wear. The worn key can then be compared against the fresh one and retired if it is due for that. Spare Car Key Duplication
What if my vehicle turns out to need dealer-only programming?
Some manufacturers restrict fob programming to a security-gated procedure that only a dealer system or an approved access pathway can complete. When a vehicle falls into that category, the visit identifies it early, explains what the vehicle specifically requires, and documents anything already confirmed, such as a compatible fob, so the eventual dealer visit is not starting the diagnosis over from nothing.
